Shanghai Diary Blog - Shanghai Movie City

Shanghai's Movie City is a real treat. The entire location is a real Potemkin Village, full of lovely streets and buildings and many facilities and props. Some of the larger buildings are used for offices and rehearsals, but the shops are all empty. The City is quite large, and all within Shanghai's borders.

The site has a large number of cars that are a real curiosity. They either have no badges, or fake ones and, while they appear to vaguely resemble old cars, they don't appear to be models of cars that have actually been in production. They have no drive train at all, only a blank dashboard without instruments, the windows often don't work and the doors often don't either. They are simply movie props, but externally real enough. There are old trucks, ambulances, some Japanese military vehicles for war movies, and many other kinds.

The city has an electric tram system and horse-drawn carriages for the tourists. It's altogether a pleasant experience to wander through it. We were there during the Chinese New Year's celebration, so there was a huge food court available, with hundreds of booths selling every kind of fresh, cooked or packaged food.
