This is an amalgam of several trips to Macau. The first photos are of the jet-boat, and then of the Venetian Hotel and Casino, and my suite there. The Venetian is the largest casino in the world, and the cost of building it was enormous. It is truly a lavish establishment, worth visiting once. Much of the building's interior has high, painted ceilings with clouds and sunshine, that give every impression of being outdoors. Very well done. Much of Macau is a dark hole, in contrast to the area surrounding the lavish casinos. The gambling establishments make a huge amount of money, but none of it filters back into the local economy, so from a social point of view gambling is a community disaster. The government may collect some tax revenue, but that isn't a replacement for a healthy economy. And by current indications, Macau will never have a bright future. Many people try to live in Zhuhai and cross the border to work every day, just to avoid the grey poverty and depressing surroundings. |
