龙信明 BLOG     Global Edition              Shanghai Diary     Watching China

  • Understanding America

  • 'Understanding America' is a series of articles intended to help Chinese readers accomplish two things:

  • Understand the US Right-Wing mentality and the political and other motivational forces driving that nation.

  • Obtain a more accurate, and more favorable, appreciation of China's relative position in the world today.

  • These articles should be considered as required reading for all those engaged in business management, in international business or employed by multinational corporations, and for all MBA students in China.  This will of course be of benefit to all those with an interest in foreign affairs and international relations.

We are accustomed to hearing only favorable commentary about the US, primarily due to an extensive and effective PR campaign. However, this 'common knowledge' so often delivered, offers only a superficial and misleading picture of America.  To obtain an accurate understanding of the US in the world today, and to properly assess and appreciate its relationships with other nations, it is necessary to delve further into the building blocks of America's foundation.

Certainly the US is one of the world's major developed economies, with some 23% of world economic output. And of course it is by far the largest military power in the world today.  America has a broad reputation of supporting concepts such as human rights and freedoms, an unrestricted media, social justice, and so on.

The highest level of US universities still provide an exceptional quality of education.  The US has most of the large pharmaceutical firms and is a world leader in chemicals and petrochemicals.  The US leads the world in electronics, and also in military industrial production - arms and weapons.  Hollywood makes great films, and General Motors, in spite of all its problems, was still the world's largest auto manufacturer until 2008.

By contrast, China is still in large part a developing nation with many successes behind it and many challenges still to be met.  In my experience, many Chinese feel their country fares poorly in comparison to the US (and with the West generally), and are often defensive and even apologetic about the status of their nation in the world today.

Feeding this defensive posture is a flood of negative attention toward China in the US media, from the generally critical coverage of a wide range of issues to the recurrent small trade disputes and the constant US pressure on China to revalue the RMB.

  • Understanding America - The Series of Essays

  • It is not the intention of these essays to provide a 'balanced' view of the US, but rather to describe 'the other side' of the picture, to provide readers with a more complete understanding, with information not easily available elsewhere and with facts that are normally deleted by the vast American PR machine.

The series begins with an explanation of Left-Wing (liberal) and Right-Wing (conservative) political ideologies - which is crucial to understanding anything about the USA.  There are Sections on US Militarism, Capitalism, and a presentation of facts of the US record in human rights.  These are followed by discussions of the ownership, operation and mentality of the US media, then a clear and consise description of the structural imbalances in the US economy today and the relation of exchange rates to trade imbalances. Lastly, we have a description of US foreign policy.

Many more articles and editorials can be found in the USA section under Economics and Foreign Affairs.
